National Agricultural Higher Education Project - NAHEP (IDP SKUAST-K)



The Approach to Formulate Objectives 

SKUAST-K has aligned itself as a reform ready institution. It, therefore, took the call of ICAR under NAHEP as the timely one to orient its educational program for bringing excellence in agricultural education and training. To thrash out the strategy of the university to align with the aims and objectives of the IDP under NAHEP, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor framed a task force committee for an appraisal of the agricultural educational system prevailing in the university.  Keeping in view the national goals and priorities of building a trained, skilled, and motivated human capital to drive the agri-economy as entrepreneurs, agri-business leaders and work force for the private sector, the committee chalked out a program for SWOT analysis of its education system in vogue.  The graphical view of the approach adopted for developing the IDP for SKUAST-K is given below:

Task Force Team:The Following Team was constituted to lead and collaborate and interact with the stakeholders to develop the Concept proposal and formulate the full Project proposal as per the guidelines of the ICAR and the world bank, under the overall supervision of the Vice Chancellor.

Debates and interaction with teachers, Students, parents and the industry people  were conducted to understand the need to reform education from being production to demand driven. The handouts of the opinions of the students during the debates are attached as annexures. The main emphasis has been on:

  • Shift from teaching to learning
  • Enhancing teacher capacity in new pedagogies
  • Interdisciplinary education with choice to choose
  • More focus on bench training and skill development
  • A strong career counselling cell
  • Mentorship for innovation and entrepreneurship and startups
  • Creative arts to help students
  • New courses on AI and ML (ii) Bioinformatics (iii) data science and cloud computing (iv) business management 

Interaction with the Officers: The need and purpose of launching NAHEP by ICAR ,  and the student feedback was presented before the officers of the university (including Deans, Directors, Registrar, Comptroller, Estates Officer), who gave their valuable inputs for bringing the reforms in agricultural education on the following accounts:

  • Education Tourism: Making SKUAST-Kashmir a sought after destination for agri-education for students nationally and globally
  • Building revenues for the university by increasing the seats for non-domicile students, payment seats, NRIs and foreign student;
  • Building outreach of the university through alumni, an attractive and dynamic web portal. Also involving alumni for funding, branding and mentoring of the students.
  • Moving beyond the ICAR ranking , and competing for NIRF and Atal ranking
  • Institulisation of the changes for sustainability 

SWOT Analysis: After thorough deliberations with the stakeholders and the officers of the university, a detailed SWOT analysis was made specifically with regard to the quality of the education, its relevance to the present knowledge driven society and the skill and confidence of the graduates.

Developing Vision, Mission, Goals and Targets for the IDP.  These statements given at the beginning of the project document are the outcome of the detailed and thorough analysis of the challenges to agri education nationally,  and the unique agri-climatic and geo-physical location of the university.
