SKUAST-Kashmir is among few universities which cater to the needs of human resource development for hill and mountain agriculture through well structured under- graduate(UG) and post graduate (PG) academic programs. The university offers academic programs at both under graduate and post-graduate levels in the field of Agriculture, Horticulture, Veterinary Sciences, Fisheries, Forestry, Sericulture and Agriculture Engineering through different subject matter divisions in seven colleges located at different places under five faculties. The resident instruction program is designed to produce competent graduates and post graduates to handle teaching, research and extension work. The growth of institution can be analyzed and justified by the increase in number of faculties and number of graduates and postgraduates, enrolled and trained and their role in production and productivity in agricultural and allied sectors which has steadily increased in the State after they were absorbed in the State Development Departments. To augment the manpower requirements in the field of Animal Sciences of the State of Jammu and Kashmir, the University in 1984-85 established its Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, which marked the expansion of institutional facilities in the University.  The first batch of B.Sc. (Forestry) students was admitted in 1987 with the financial assistance of the ICAR. The programme was initially started as a stream in the Faculty of Agriculture Wadura, Sopore. Now we have a full fledged Faculty of Forestry located in its new Campus at Benihama, Ganderbal. The Faculty of Fisheries was established in 2005 at F.V.Sc. and AH, Shuhama Campus offering (Alusteng) Undergraduate in Fisheries. Subsequently in 2011 faculty instituted the Masters and Ph.D. programme in Fisheries with emphasis on cold Water Fisheries in its new campus at Rangil, Ganderbal. The UG program in Sericulture and in Agricultural Engineering was started in 2006 at Institute of Temperate Sericulture, Mirgund and Division of Agri-Engineering, Shalimar under the Faculty of Agriculture. Subsequently Masters programme in Agri- Engineering (2012), Food Technology (2012) Biochemistry (2013), Plant Biotechnology (2013), Seed Science Technology (2012), Agri-Microbiology (2013) and Ph.D. programme in Agri. Statistics (2011), Agriculture Extension and Communication (2012), Food Science Technology (2012) and Agriculture Microbiology (2013) were also instituted. The Masters programme in the remaining disciplines of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry viz Veterinary Anatomy (2011), Veterinary Biochemistry (2012), Poultry Science (2012), Animal Biotechnology (2012), Veterinary Extension Education (2014) and Ph.D. in Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology (2008), Animal Breeding Genetics (2008), Veterinary Pathology(2008), Animal Nutrition (2012), Livestock Products and Management (2012), Poultry Science (2012),  Veterinary Clinical Medicine(2013), Veterinary Parasitology (2014), Veterinary Biochemistry (2014), Animal Reproduction and Gynaecology (2014), Livestock Products Technology (2014), Animal Biotechnology (2014) were instituted. Every year entrance examination for UG and PG courses is held during autumn semester while as for  PhD during spring semester.
