Prof. Nazeer Ahmed has taken over as Vice-Chancellor of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology of Kashmir, Srinagar on 23rd of October 2015. Prior to his appointments as Vice-Chancellor of SKUAST (K), he was serving as Director, ICAR-Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture, Srinagar for 8 years. He had served the University in various capacities as Scientist, Senior Scientist, Associate Director Research, Professor-cum-Head, Dean Agriculture and Director Resident Instruction-cum-Dean Post Graduate Studies. During his 30 years of service, he has contributed significantly as a teacher, researcher, extension worker and administrator. As teacher, he taught and designed both UG and PG courses and guided more than hundred Master’s and Ph.D’s as Chairman and Co-Chairman and was instrumental in establishment of Faculty of Horticulture at SKUAST (K). Through various ad-hoc projects he created state of art field and laboratory facilities both at the University and at CITH and published more than 300 research papers, extension bulletins and review papers in national and international journals. During the period, he attended more than 90 workshops and conferences and conducted several national trainings, summer/winter schools and workshops as Course Director. In research, he executed several multidisciplinary and inter-institutional, national and state projects and developed and released 33 varieties and hybrids and recommended 64 production recommendations for temperate fruits and vegetables, which have covered significant area in temperate region contributing to national income. In extension, besides popularizing new varieties, hybrids and technologies, he conducted several extension programmes like kisan melas, exhibitions, field days and trainings for the benefit of farmers and other stakeholders.
As a horticulture expert, he executed number of special assignments as Chairman, Co-Chairman and Member of various committees, international delegation and conferences. He received Rajbhasha Gaurav award, Dr. R. S. Paroda Award; Dr. M. H. Marigowda National Endowment Award; Dr. Kirti Singh Gold Medal; Vijay Shree Award; Glory of India Gold Medal and Chaudhary Devilal Outstanding award for best AICRP (VC & Potato) for his contribution to agricultural research and education in temperate region and is a Fellow of Indian Society of Vegetable Science, Horticultural Society of India, Indian Society of Horticultural Research and Development and Confederation of Horticultural Associations of India besides having several best paper awards. He is also a life member of sixteen professional societies where he is associated as Patron, Chief Editor, Executive Councilor and Referee of journals and societies. He is very social, honest and hardworking scientists, believes in teamwork and love mother nature.
