About the Faculty

    Fishery sector occupies an important place in the socio-economic development of the country. According to Food & Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, the mean growth of aquaculture meat sector has averaged almost 13.5% per year, as compared with only 3% for terrestrial meat production. In this context, the Indian fisheries sector, having a vast potential, has shown enormous growth rate, with over eight fold, in its contribution to the GDP as compared to only four-fold increase in agriculture during the same period. India's share to the world's fish production has also enabled an increase in per capita consumption of fish from 3 kg to 8 kg and further providing employment to over six million fishermen with an equal number of people employed in ancillary activities. Jammu and Kashmir is endowed with vast and varied fishery resources, which offer immense potential for augmenting fish production for domestic consumption as well as for exports for improving the social well-being of the fisher-folk, for enhancing the nutritional status of the population and for providing self-employment opportunities to the rural population thereby accelerating rural development.  

      The adequate Research & Development coupled with Education support in Hill/coldwater fisheries sector are very important and critical to the region. Even the Human resource Development for this sector is very inadequate. No Institution in the country is conducting Resident Instruction programmes in Fishery Science specific to temperate Coldwaters. Most of the programmes are tailor-made for warm water, coastal and marine sectors. Therefore, in order to remove this imbalance and address the issues of coldwater/temperate sector in greater detail to generate suitable technologies for raising per unit productivity, the Faculty of Fisheries in SKUAST (K) was established in August 2005. Mandate of the Faculty shall be to conduct research and disseminate the findings and other technical information through extension education programmes, besides producing skilled and trained manpower for the better administration and management of fisheries sector.
